Servis

Often observed in a secluded part of the church, individuals would stand, sit, or kneel by a table, lighting a candle using the flame from an existing one. Some praying for the deceased, others for health or guidance. The atmosphere was meant to be quiet and contemplative. Yet as a child the silence heightened my discomfort of imposing on one’s ceremonious moment. Despite this, and an already evident distrust in a cultural grammar largely chosen for me, the ritual of light eventually became a welcome and appreciated memory. When conventions of religion and spirituality are removed, what remains is a space for intent.Whether its love, longing or despair, whether one wishes to internalise their reasons or share them with the person next to them, the practise of lighting a candle is a symbol of self.
